Midtown Madness: South
📍 Meet here
Madison Square Park
Welcome to Midtown Manhattan! This space was used by the US military for drills parades and gatherings. It was the largest open public space in Manhattan and the point from which New York was defended. As the city expanded reaching ever new heights the parade shrank until it was designated a 7-acre public park named after President James Madison in 1847 who led the country during the War of 1812. From 1876 to 1882 the Statue of Liberty's torch-bearing arm was displayed in the square in an effort to raise money for the construction of the statue's pedestal. Ever the busy heart of New York, use this square as a gateway to this frenetic quarter.
